By the time I reached high school, these buildings were so over used that they were generally unfit for habitation. No longer workers' housing, they were "our slums". I only knew one person who lived there. He was a fellow high school student with some boxing ability. He fought preliminaries at four dollars a bout (win or lose) and knew he would never see a main event. He lived with an uncle who picked glass for a living and would help after school. |
